HEMI Engines: Reliability, Power, Consumption, Price

HEMI Engines: Reliability, Power, Consumption, Price

If you know anything at all about Dodge, Jeep, RAM, and Chrysler models, you have surely already heard about the famous and very popular HEMI engine. This wouldn’t be surprising, especially given that the first engine to bear this name dates back to 1964.

Generally a large displacement V8 engine, roughly from 5.7 L to 7.2 L, its popularity is partly due to the fact that it combines strong power and performance with excellent efficiency and reliability. This feat is made possible by the hemispherical shape of its combustion chambers, hence the name HEMI, short for hemispherical.

The Different Versions of the HEMI Engine

After being removed from the lineup very briefly, the HEMI is making a strong comeback following high demand. In fact, the 2026 RAM 1500 will once again welcome the 5.7 L HEMI V8 engine as well as a 6.2 L option.

Stellantis has also just confirmed the availability of a 6.4 L HEMI V8 in the 2026 Jeep Wrangler, which will produce nothing less than 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Rumour also has it that the Dodge Charger should welcome this new, never-before-seen HEMI. To be confirmed!

HEMI Engine Reliability: A Solid V8

The HEMI is known for its proven reliability and robust mechanicals. In fact, you will find used RAM 1500 models equipped with a HEMI that still sell at a good price, even with 350,000 km or 400,000 km on the odometer; when they have been well maintained, obviously.

HEMI Engine: Power and Performance

The HEMI delivers solid power and performance. The 5.7 L that powers the RAM, for example, produces 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, and allows towing of up to 11,610 lb. (5,266 kg). Larger displacement HEMIs will see significant increases in power as well.

HEMI Engine: Fuel Economy

As for the HEMI and its fuel economy, in a RAM 1500, for example, we are talking about an average of about 11.7 L/100 in combined cycle for the 5.7 L engine. If that seems high, let us not forget this is a full-size truck. Therefore, these figures are more than reasonable.

HEMI Engine: Price and Maintenance Costs

It is difficult to set a concrete number for HEMI maintenance cost, since it will largely depend on its version, the vehicle it powers, and how you use it. It may seem more expensive to maintain than other engines at first, but you should not lose sight of its superior durability.

One thing is certain, if you follow the maintenance schedule suggested by the manufacturer for your HEMI, including oil changes, you can expect it to retain its performance levels for many kilometres.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Engine

Here is a table of the strengths and weaknesses of HEMI engines:

Strengths

Weaknesses

√ High power and performance

√ High durability

√ Distinctive sound

√ Ride comfort

√ High reliability

⌧ Larger and heavier than some engines

⌧ May cost more to maintain initially.
