The history of the Dandurand family in the automotive sector started at the turn of the 20th century, when Ucal-Henri Dandurand, a most visionary young man, took part in projects as innovative as the construction of a bridge on the Lachine Canal and the installation of sewer, water and lighting systems in Verdun. He is also known for the creation of the Rosemont neighborhood. An accomplished businessman, he was the first to own an automobile in the city of Montreal, a Waltham Steam, as well as the first licence plate number in Quebec: Q-1. He was also one of the first directors of the Automobile Club of Canada. As well, we must not fail to mention another famous vehicle of the Dandurand family, the Pullman, that could seat up to 26 occupants and was fitted with a toilet and a kitchenette!
One of Ucal-Henri Dandurand’s sons, Hector, also left his mark in the automotive world, distinguishing himself as a remarkable salesman of Diamond T trucks in Montreal; he even managed to increase sales in his territory by 50 percent! His secret? He toured around the Metropolitan area, presenting 2 trucks simultaneously, the first one towed on a trailer by the other one. This ingenious idea went quite far (pun not intended!), since after hearing about this great innovation, the manufacturer decided to propose it to all Diamond T dealers in North America!
Jacques Dandurand represented the 3rd generation of this illustrious family and, near the end of the 1940s, he was General Manager of Dumas & Fils Chrysler. In 1955, he was also responsible for the launch of a GM-Pontiac-Buick-Cadillac dealership in Sorel-Tracy, Dandurand Automobile Ltée. Upon returning to Montreal in 1965, he worked for various automotive companies such as Modern Motor Sales, Forté-GM and Verdun Chrysler. Among his other deeds, let's mention that Jacques Dandurand was the first exclusive Quebec distributor of the famous Amphicar Amphibious Car, built in West Germany.
Jacques’ son, Louis Dandurand, continued the family tradition and held various positions in sales, mechanics and accounting, and at 20 years-old, found himself in customers’ service at Verdun Chrysler, which would change its name to Champlain Dodge Chrysler a few years later. He became its full owner in 1984 and dedicates himself to offering unparalleled service to his clientele—for many years winner of the Award of Excellence in customer service—which undoubtedly contributed to the success of his dealership. Louis Dandurand was also awarded numerous prizes over the years, such as the 1994 Top Dealer Award, the trophée de la réussite—in the dealership innovation category (1992-1994), and the Gold Medal for best business, among others.
Today, the 2 sons of Louis Dandurand, Patrick and Pascal, are the proud owners of Rive-Sud Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Rive Sud FIAT in Brossard and wish to continue this century-old family tradition in the auto industry, as well as with their involvement in the community. While Patrick is the President of this dealership located on the South Shore of Montreal, Pascal is its Vice-President General Manager, and the 5th generation of Dandurand is committed, just as its predecessors, to stand out from the competition by providing exceptional service to its clientele. Both having grown up around the automobile world from their early childhood, Patrick et Pascal proudly follow in the footsteps of their forebears and who knows, a 6th generation of Dandurand might also succeed them in the auto industry in a few decades!
